Netflix account sharing restricted: you can still share your account!

It's official: on Tuesday May 23, streaming giant Netflix announced the launch of a new feature enabling users to share their account by subscribing to an additional paid option. This solution is in line with the platform's desire to put an end to account sharing, which it considers abusive. ^[1].

Already available in South America and Canada, and since last February in Portugal and Spain, the offer is now being rolled out more widely in around a hundred countries, as well as in America and France. It is now possible to authorize a guest to use your account for an additional fee. In France, for example, you have to pay €5.99 per month, depending on the type of subscription, to be able to share it with someone from outside the household. ^[2]. A surcharge that impacts the monthly budget allocated to these services by users.

The price of the Standard subscription in France therefore rises from €13.49 ^[3] to €19.48 per month with this new feature, an increase of around 44% per month on the initial price. An increase widely decried by French users, all the more so at a time of high inflation.

The platform already enables subscription fees to be shared, by allowing account users to offer the remaining spaces on their subscriptions to split the monthly fee. The subscription owner and co-subscribers thus share the same account to benefit from a lower-cost service. 

With this new feature, the price of a Netflix subscription on Spliiit in France rises from €5.08 to €10.84. This price is evolving, but remains 40% lower than on the SVOD platform.
