Disney must-haves on Disney+

1. 🌺 Encanto

Available on Disney+

  • Release date: November 24, 2021
  • Director: Byron Howard, Jared Bush
  • Genre: Animation, Fantasy
  • Running time: 102 min

"Encanto is truly a gem. Imagine a family full of magic in the heart of the Colombian mountains, where everyone has a wonderful gift... except Mirabel. But when the magic begins to fade, it's up to her to save her family. This film is an explosion of color, music (thanks to Lin-Manuel Miranda!) and emotions that will take you by surprise.

Why do we love it?

Because everyone can relate to this imperfect family. The characters all have their weaknesses, their doubts, and that's what makes them so endearing. What's more, the songs are incredible and stay in your head for days.

Fun fact: The song We Don't Talk About Bruno was such a hit that it ended up overtaking Libérée, Délivrée in the charts. And honestly, who hasn't sung "Bruno" in the shower?‍

2. 🏴‍☠️ Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Available on Disney+

  • Release date : July 9, 2003
  • Director: Gore Verbinski
  • Genre: Adventure, Fantasy‍
  • Running time: 143 min

It's hard to resist the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow. With his quirky sense of humor, resourcefulness and inimitable good looks, Jack draws us into a tale of pirates, curses and lost treasure. It's the film that launched the whole saga and remains, to this day, one of the best adventure films ever made.

Why do we love it?

Johnny Depp is simply brilliant as Jack Sparrow, and the chemistry between him, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley is perfect. Add to that spectacular naval battles and an epic soundtrack... what more could you ask for?

Fun fact: The character of Jack Sparrow was partly inspired by Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, who would go on to play the role of his father in subsequent films. 🏴‍☠️

‍3. 🌹 Beauty and the Beast (Live action version)

Available on Disney+

  • Release date: March 22, 2017
  • Director: Bill Condon
  • Genre: Fantasy, Romance
  • Running time: 129 min

Step back into the enchanted world of "Beauty and the Beast", but this time with live actors. Emma Watson is perfect as Belle, the book-loving village girl who finds herself trapped in the castle of a Beast... who may not be as monstrous as she seems. A faithful remake that succeeds in bringing back the magic of the original, with a few modern touches.

Why do we love it?

Because it's a nostalgic and enchanting journey. The songs are the same, but reworked, and the casting is impeccable. Special mention to Luke Evans as Gaston, who is both hilarious and terrifying.

Fun fact : Emma Watson loved the role because Belle is a strong, independent heroine. She even insisted that the character be shown as a real inventor, not just a dreamer.

‍4. 🌊 Vaiana, la Légende du Bout du Monde

Available on Disney+

  • Release date: November 30, 2016
  • Director: Ron Clements, John Musker
  • Genre: Animation, Adventure
  • Running time: 107 min

Vaiana is a born adventurer. Her only dream is to see what lies beyond the reefs of her island. Accompanied by Maui, a demigod with a big ego, she sets off to save her people, against a backdrop of magnificent landscapes and a breathtaking soundtrack. "Vaiana" is a true ode to discovery and adventure.

Why do we love it?

Because Vaiana is a badass heroine who shows that strength has nothing to do with muscles. And what about Maui (Dwayne Johnson), who is simply hilarious and moving. And then there's the scenery... it's like being on vacation!

Fun fact: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson recorded the song You're Welcome himself, even though he's not the singer. And frankly, he's done a great job of it.

5. 🐉 Raya and the Last Dragon

Available on Disney+

  • Release date : March 5, 2021
  • Director: Don Hall, Carlos López Estrada
  • Genre: Animation, Adventure
  • Running time: 114 min

In a divided world, Raya is the last warrior capable of saving her kingdom. But she can't do it alone: she needs the last dragon, Sisu, and above all, she must learn to trust others again. Visually stunning, "Raya and the Last Dragon" is an epic adventure filled with humor, epic battles and moments of vulnerability.

Why do we love it?

Because the film skilfully mixes badass fight scenes with gentle moments. The relationship between Raya and Sisu (played by Awkwafina, as funny as ever) is adorable. And the message about trust is something we all need from time to time.

Fun fact: Awkwafina improvised many of her lines as Sisu. You can feel it, and it makes the character even more authentic.

‍6. 🐰 Zootopie

Available on Disney+

  • Release date: February 17, 2016
  • Director: Byron Howard, Rich Moore
  • Genre: Animation, Comedy
  • Running time: 108 min

Zootopie is a town where all the animals live in harmony... well, in theory. Judy Hopps, the police's first rabbit, has to solve a big case with the help of Nick Wilde, a trickster fox. "Zootopie" is much more than an animated film: it's about prejudice, dreams and the idea of never giving up.

Why do we love it?

Because it's smart, funny and full of meaning. The gags are irresistible (who could forget Flash, the world's slowest sloth?), and the messages are so topical. Children laugh, adults think.

Fun fact: The scene with Flash was so popular that it was shown in previews and went viral even before the film's release.

7. 🦁 The Lion King (Live action version)

Available on Disney+

  • Release date: July 17, 2019
  • Director: Jon Favreau
  • Genre: Adventure, Drama
  • Running time: 118 min

"The Lion King" is back, and this time with incredibly realistic images. Simba, Timon, Pumbaa, Scar... all your favorite characters are here, in a version that pays tribute to the original while adding a dizzying new visual dimension.

Why do we love it?

Because it's as moving as ever. The scene where Simba loses his father, the triumphant return to confront Scar... it's all there, with a bluffing realism that gives you the impression of living in the heart of the savannah.

Fun fact: The song Hakuna Matata has been reworked with a few new lines, but the spirit remains the same. And Timon and Pumbaa are even funnier.

8. ❄️ Frozen II: The Snow Queen 2

Available on Disney+

  • Release date: November 20, 2019
  • Director: Chris Buck, Jennifer Lee
  • Genre: Animation, Fantasy
  • Running time: 103 min

Elsa hears a mysterious voice and decides to set off in search of answers about her powers, accompanied by her sister Anna, Kristoff, and of course Olaf. "Frozen II" is a more mature adventure, with higher stakes and shocking revelations about their past.

‍Whydo we like it?

Because the magic is even more powerful, the music is incredible (hello "Into the Unknown"), and the characters evolve in a way that's a pleasure to watch.

Fun fact: The song Into the Unknown has been sung in several languages, and the multilingual version is just a must-listen.

9. ☀️ Luca

Available on Disney+

  • Release date: June 18, 2021
  • Director: Enrico Casarosa
  • Genre: Animation, Adventure
  • Running time: 95 min

"Luca is the story of an unforgettable summer. Luca and Alberto are two sea creatures who discover the human world in a small Italian coastal village. They have to hide their secret while living extraordinary adventures.

Why do we love it?

Because it reminds us of summer, friendship and freedom. The film is also a beautiful metaphor for self-acceptance and acceptance of others. Visually, it's a postcard.

Fun fact: The fictional town of Portorosso was inspired by Italy's Cinque Terre region, where director Enrico Casarosa used to spend his summers. That alone makes you want to escape.

‍10. 🧜‍♀️ The Little Mermaid (Live action version)

Available on Disney+

  • Release date: May 26, 2023
  • Director: Rob Marshall
  • Genre: Adventure, Fantasy
  • Running time: 135 min

The famous Ariel who dreams of discovering the human world is back in a vibrant, modern version. Halle Bailey plays a determined and endearing Ariel, who will do anything to live out her dreams, even if it means making a risky pact with Ursula, the sea witch.

Why do we love it?

Because the songs are revisited with incredible freshness, and the special effects really make us believe in this underwater universe. Halle Bailey shines in the role of Ariel, and Melissa McCarthy is an absolutely brilliant Ursula.

Fun fact : To shoot the underwater scenes, Halle Bailey had to undergo intensive training to look totally at ease underwater. The result? We believe it 100%.
